Let’s face it: Even those who enjoy a good party don’t necessarily want to stay out until midnight or beyond. That can create a bit of a challenge on New Year’s Eve when midnight is the focal point of the celebration.

But if you are in the Gulf Shores area, consider the issue solved. Come to the Early Bird New Year’s Eve Bash created for people just like you! Listen or dance to top-notch live music, compete in the table decoration contest if you wish, celebrate the close of 2011 and the birth of 2012, and let your presence there be your final good deed of this year.

To get the most out of the evening, plan to be at the Erie Meyer Civic Center when the doors open at 6 p.m. this Saturday, December 31. Bring festive decorations for your table, but please leave the confetti, glitter and open flames at home. The table with the most outrageous decor gets bragging rights and a little something from the musical star of the evening.

Beginning at 7:00, the 2011 Trop Rock Singer/Songwriter of the Year, Brent Burns, will be sharing his popular blend of covers and original music, including a number of humorous musical commentaries for which he is well known.

The food will be perfect, as you will be supplying your own snacks and drinks. (Alcohol is allowed; please drink responsibly.) Bring enough goodies for just you, or plenty to share—whatever makes you happy. After all, it’s your party!

The $15 advance tickets are available at the Christian Service Center, 317 Dolphin Avenue in Gulf Shores, open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to noon; cash or checks are accepted. You may also purchase admission through the Brent Burns website or by calling 251- 948-8863; or pay $20 at the door (space permitting). Book an entire table of 8 for $120 and you will have reserved seating. All proceeds benefit the Christian Service Center, a 100% volunteer organization that gives a hand up, not a hand out, to those in need.

Let’s explore the list.

The cello is the instrument of choice for musical artist Ben Sollee. Influenced by his classical training, his grandfather’s bluegrass music, his father’s R&B guitar style and today’s pop/folk/alternative/world music, Ben has crafted what feels like an entirely new genre of music that requires the cello to mimic other instruments. His effortless vocal tones and impassioned lyrics are grounded by his bow as his fingers dance on the strings. Beautifully balanced percussion completes the minimalist ensemble sound.

The bicycle is the mode of transportation for Ben Sollee’s “Ditch the Van” tour. Ben— along with percussionist Jordan Ellis, the tour manager and a crew member—created this rather unusual caravan to feel more connected to the people and places where they play. It requires them to slow down and appreciate the communities, to connect to the world in a more personal manner than is possible in the typical van, bus or truck that speeds touring performers along the interstate highways from one venue to the next.

A smile is, by generally accepted definition, “a facial expression characterized by an upward curving of the corners of the mouth, indicating pleasure.” You’ll find one on the face of Ben Sollee, a natural response to the pure joy he feels when creating and sharing his music. You’ll also find a smile on the face of each person who has chosen to be present for the concert. It will be seen as an expression of interest, appreciation, encouragement and bliss as the music transports each listener to another realm.

It must be obvious by now that the ticket money is the one thing from our list that doesn’t belong. That’s right—this is a free performance hosted by The Hangout in Gulf Shores. You could pay to experience Ben Sollee’s artistry at any number of other tour stops, but it’s an extra bonus to use that money to feed your earthly body while Ben and company feed your musical soul.

On Wednesday, November 2, at 7 p.m., you’ll fully understand the combination of a cello, a bicycle and a smile. Oh, it won’t require any effort—the moment Ben Sollee takes the stage, you’ll know it was meant to be.

Free evening concert of laid-back island music with Brent Burns and Sunny Jim on Thursday, June 30 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

All of these and more create the theme of the evening when you attend a free trop-rock concert Thursday evening, June 30, at the Erie Meyer Civic Center in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

The stars of the evening are Brent Burns and Sunny Jim. You may recognize Brent’s name from the local music scene, as he is quite popular here for his covers and his often-humorous originals. He was recognized as the 2010 Trop Rock Award winner as Songwriter of the Year and also for CD and Song of the Year, and in 2008 as Entertainer of the Year and CD of the Year.

Sunny Jim’s music is heard across the globe on Jimmy Buffett’s Radio Margaritaville available via satellite. He got his musical start in Southern California, soon headed to Nashville, and then began a 12-year stint performing in the Cayman Islands. Guitar was his first instrument, but the Caribbean sound inspired him to develop a talent for steel drums as well.

Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, snacks and beverages for this evening of laid-back island entertainment presented as part of the Gulf Shores Outdoor and In series of concerts and more. Memorial Day Weekend brings many opportunities for parties and get-togethers. LuLuPalooza promises to be a highlight among all the gatherings, so if you are in the Gulf Shores area, you’ll definitely want to be a part of this musical jamboree.

Saturday, May 28, brings to the stage Cornbred from 1 until 3 p.m., followed by Soul Rebels Brass Band at 4 until 5:30, then Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes beginning at 6:30.

Sunday, May 29, begins with David St. Romain from 1 until 4 p.m., then Randall Bramblett from 5 until 6:30 p.m., and finally Paul Thorn at 7:30.

Grateful Dead: Alive Again

One night only! The classic rockumentary The Grateful Dead Movie Event is making a reappearance with an engagement at Cobb Pinnacle 14 in Gulf Shores, Alabama. We’re not the only area showing this—there are 540 theaters across the nation carrying this special presentation—but we’re thrilled that a local outlet is making it available to our many resident and visiting Dead Heads.

The rollback of time begins at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Jerry Garcia and crew will explode onto the big screen as they were seen at the height of their stardom almost 40 years ago. But this isn’t exactly the same reel shown way back when—by attending this showing, you will be part of an exclusive group to enjoy never-before-seen interviews with Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir!

The last wide theatrical distribution was 1977, when it was first aired. Filming took place at San Francisco’s Winterland Arena in October 1974. (Were you or a friend or family member in that audience? Be sure to watch the crowd shots closely . . . )
