Take advantage of the many classes offered this winter at the Orange Beach Arts Center.

A six-week watercolor class is available for all levels, beginning Monday, January 10. The beginner class is scheduled for 9:30 until noon, and an intermediate/advanced class runs from 12:30 until 3:00. For just $80, you will learn about colors, brush techniques, special effects and more. Rich Willows will present information, then be available for individual attention as you work on your project.

If molding clay into beautiful and functional items captures your interest, join Janie Currier as she teaches basic pottery techniques over four weeks beginning Monday, January 10, 5:30-7:30 p.m. The $65 fee includes supplies as well as firing, glazing and finishing.

Those curious about oil painting will enjoy a beginner’s class offered by Jo Hall. From 9:00 until noon on Tuesdays, starting January 11, the seven-week course will concentrate on still life projects as you explore how to begin, learn about pigments, and work with various techniques to enhance your creation. The $150 fee includes a full hands-on experience with plenty of individual attention.

Birthday Bash at The Hot Shop

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

You may not remember the day you were born or your first birthday, but the folks at Orange Beach Arts Center and The Hot Shop are full of first-year memories and excitement for the future of Alabama’s only public-access glass studio.

You're invited to a birthday bash for The Hot Shop at the Orange Beach Arts Center on Friday, August 20, 2010.

And what a fun evening they have planned to mark the occasion!

From 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, August 20, you’ll be treated to a Hot Glass Cold Drinks celebration. Food and drinks are just the beginning, accompanied by the uplifting, sophisticated guitar sounds of Roman Street.

Wander through the Arts Center and around the grounds, and you’ll find all kinds of artistic activities in progress. Glass-blowing demonstrations will be offered by Mark Lupeta, Steve and Dee Burrow will show their process of pottery making, and Opal Young will invite you to watch as she creates a painting.

A public mosaic project will be led by Connie Blum, so don’t pass up your opportunity to add your personal touch. “Bob” the Art Car will be making a special appearance. And you know you can’t pass up a chance at a raffle, especially when it will benefit the Arts Center.

This Birthday Bash is also the opening of the 2010 Members Show. Check out new works by your favorite artists while you discover some new favorites to admire.

Learn more by contacting the Arts Center at 251-981-2787—or simply show up and talk to the Arts Center folks at 26389 Canal Rd. in Orange Beach, east of the Hwy. 161 intersection.
