Do you find yourself imagining the glorious view from one of our area’s penthouses? Do you wish you could take a peek into—and out of—one of those luxurious, top-floor residences? This Saturday, you can stop imagining and let your eyes take in the View From the Top.

Tour 6 exquisite penthouses with gorgeous views this Saturday to help Sirens of the Sea award scholarships and assist Mary's Shelter.
The Sirens of the Sea organization presents this 5th annual tour of condos and penthouses to raise funds for their scholarship awarded to a local high school senior, and to give assistance to Mary’s Shelter, a provider of family-style living for homeless mothers-to-be. Your $20 admission helps to make both of these programs possible.
This year’s tour includes six exquisite residences on the gulf and the bay in Gulf Shores (Oceania), Orange Beach (Phoenix West, Sea Chase, Caribe) and Perdido Key (Spanish Key, La Serena). When you purchase your tickets, you will receive directions to each building, plus six raffle tickets. A beautiful basket will be on display at each property, along with a list of its contents; simply place your ticket(s) in the raffle jar(s) of your choice for your chance to win. Plan to stay long enough at each location to absorb the view as you chat with friendly folks and snack on delicious treats.
Simply go to any of the properties Saturday, February 4, 2012, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to purchase your six-property pass and begin your tour. For advance purchase, you may contact Peggy Martin at 251-942-6440 or Century 21 Meyer Real Estate agent Angela Martin at 251-923-6082.

Good ol’ gospel singin’ is comin’ your way!

Three powerful days of gospel quartet singing February 2-4 in Orange Beach, Alabama. You don't want to miss this!
You’ll be amazed by the tremendous talents of numerous gospel artists, both well-known and up-and-coming, at the Gulf Coast Quartet Convention in Orange Beach, Alabama, on February 2, 3 and 4, 2012.
From 2 until 5 p.m. and again 6 until 7 p.m. each day, rising stars are welcomed to the stage by Phil Cross, Tim Lovelace, Paul Smith, and Rose Gilley.
The evening’s featured and headline performers will take the stage between 7 and 10 p.m.:
Thursday— Phil Cross, HisSong, Mark 209 (formerly The Mystery Men), Tim Lovelace, Fourtwelve (formerly Shiloh)
Friday— Jeff & Sheri Easter
Saturday— The Hoppers
At 10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, the Night Owl Showcase will be open to any performers who want to sing again, so be sure to keep the applause going. You may even hear some spontaneous regroupings by the artists.
Saturday afternoon, arrive early and be ready for laughs with the Tim Lovelace Comedy Hour from 1 until 2 p.m. Also on Saturday, 1–4 p.m., Phil Cross is hosting a Writer’s Lab. Both events are available for a separate fee and may be purchased at the artist’s booth in the exhibit area.
All of the events will take place at the Conference Center at The Wharf, except the Writer’s Lab, which is at Romar Beach Baptist Church. And all of the artists will have booths where you can speak with the members, purchase CDs, take pictures and collect autographs.
General admission tickets for the 3-day event are $50, or you may purchase a single-day pass for $25. Artist Circle tickets—$100 full pass or $50 single-day—allow seating within the first 5 rows, where you may also interact with the seated artists. Advance purchase is preferred by calling organizer Paul Smith at 251-981-8960, but tickets also will be available at the door. And don’t worry about where to go for mealtime, as local restaurants will be there with their booths of delicious foods from seafood to barbecue and more.

The holiday season is filled with opportunities for giving and for fun for all ages and interests. But the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo in Gulf Shores has it all covered in one place.

Talk with Santa and play with the animals at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo's Christmas Party Saturday, December 17, 2011.
Saturday, December 17, is their annual Christmas Party with Santa. Between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., admission for children 10 and under is free with a paying adult. Bring your camera, as Santa is eager to pose for pictures and chat with your young one. Refreshments will be served, and some of your favorite animals will be making appearances.
Most of us have a soft spot for animals, so why not bring a gift or two for your favorite creatures? Your generosity will help feed, clean, house or offer entertainment to some of the residents of “The Little Zoo That Could.” If you’re not sure what gifts to bring, choose from the many items on the wish list. Another idea is to bring gift cards from Lowe’s or Home Depot, or simply make a donation.
If you are still searching for gifts for the humans on your list, the gift shop is filled with items from clothing and accessories to toys to books and more. Perhaps an Individual, Friendship (2 people), Family, Grandparents or Group (up to 6 people) membership would bring the most enjoyment, as it means your recipient gets unlimited, free admission for a year. Memberships begin at just $40 and range up to $120.
Where else can you get your fill of Santa and animal fun for the kids, feel great about giving much-needed assistance to a wonderful organization, and complete your gift shopping all in one place in one day? For many reasons, the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is the place to be at the holidays or any time of year.

The environmentalist. The volunteer. The nature lover. The person who has everything. The proud local. The appreciative visitor. The ecotourist. The science teacher or student.

Your gift to a friend or family member also supports Weeks Bay Foundation programs.
Many of us fit into at least one of those categories. And we know of one particular gift item that will satisfy any or all of these folks.
When you give someone a 2011 Weeks Bay ornament that commemorates the 25th anniversary of the designation of the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, you give much more than a simple gift to a friend or family member. You also support the natural environments of our area and beyond.
Current programs of the Weeks Bay Foundation include submerged equipment, weather stations and sampling projects to monitor water quality. And their ongoing objective is to purchase land in the Weeks Bay watershed that may be added to the National Wildlife Reserve, or be set aside with a conservation easement such as to preserve a wildlife habitat, or create a buffer to conservation lands.
You have four options for securing this decorative item that depicts a fisherman in a kayak. The best value is a combination ornament and one-year membership in the Weeks Bay Foundation for just $50. Send an ornament with a holiday card that includes your personal greeting for just $20, shipping included. Ornaments alone are $15 online, or you may purchase them in person for $12 at Fairhope Pharmacy’s Christmas ’Round the Corner or the Weeks Bay Reserve at 11401 U.S. Hwy. 98 in Fairhope (251-990-5004).

Creating a sleigh ride without snow can be a bit of a challenge. But with a little imagination from both organizers and riders in Orange Beach, trucks and trailers become magical sleighs, taking you through brightly decorated paths along the Backcountry Trail to view live Nativity scenes, hear carolers and small instrumental groups, and of course, meet Santa.

Ride the Backcountry Trail, transformed into a holiday wonderland, Friday, December 9, 2011, in Orange Beach, Alabama.
Hot chocolate and cookies will be supplied for the tour. Musical entertainment at City Hall, the departure point, will help pass the time while waiting to join the next available ride. Raggedy Ann and Andy, as well as other children’s characters, will be sharing the merriment.
Sleigh rides are scheduled to depart every 5 minutes, beginning at 6:00 this Friday, December 9, and the ride lasts approximately one hour. The event ends at 9:00, so you’ll have plenty of time before and after the ride to enjoy the decorated booths of area businesses, including restaurants, retail shops, salons, churches and more. (You can even pick up some coupons to make your holiday shopping a little easier on the budget.)
Grab your coats, hats and mittens and enjoy the warmth of a free, old-fashioned community holiday event in Orange Beach this weekend. For more information, please call 251-981-1063.
Create more bonding time and a break from the holiday rush by surprising your family with a weekend beach getaway. Take a look at the 3-bedroom condos available in Orange Beach, then apply promo code 1112W1 to get a free night when you pay for 2. Clothing, games and electronics make wonderful holiday gifts, but experiences and memories as a family are priceless.

The twinkling lights in stores and on houses, the oversized plastic candy canes and snowflakes attached to the city’s light poles, the wreaths in the windows, the seasonal music in stores and on the radio . . . there’s no mistaking it—it’s Christmas time!

Share the holiday cheer with your neighbors at the City of Gulf Shores' Christmas Open House on Thursday, December 1, 2011.
Your entire family is invited to celebrate as a community (whether you are a resident or visitor) when the City of Gulf Shores opens its doors Thursday, December 1 at 6:00 p.m.
You’ll find an abundance of holiday joy spread among four locations, all within walking distance of each other: Gulf Shores Museum, Thomas B. Norton Public Library, Erie Meyer Civic Center and Bodenhamer Recreation Center. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there, joined by some of their elves to help with photo opportunities (bring your camera!) and hand out treats. Whether listening or dancing, you’ll enjoy music by the Mobile Symphony Brass Quintet and Brent Burns. Crafts, stories, and activities such as a moonwalk bounce house will keep the children entertained, and everyone will marvel at the train sets, award-winning gingerbread houses and holiday village.
You can pick up a schedule of entertainment at any of the four locations mentioned above or South Baldwin Community Theater, or you may call 251-968-1172 for more information. And please plan to arrive with a gift to donate to Toys for Tots so that less-fortunate children also may feel the warmth of the holiday season.
