Jubilee Festival Sept. 25–26

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

It’s truly a weekend event for everyone: regional arts and crafts including a juried art show, children’s art activities, festival food, local musical entertainment, and televised football games indoors on large screens.

Festival food fuels your weekend at the Jubilee Festival in Daphne on September 25 & 26, 2010.

The 22nd Annual Jubilee Festival in Daphne will also donate ten percent of the profits to the Alabama Coastal Foundation to aid in the recovery and regeneration of the Gulf Coast.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 25 and again Sunday, September 26, you are invited to admire the handiwork of some of the region’s best talent. Better yet, support the artists and enhance your home or wardrobe when you purchase your favorite masterpieces. (You’ll find lots of wonderful gifts here, as well!) Plan on lunch, snacks and dinner during the festival—you know you can’t resist festival food! And don’t forget to pick up souvenir magnets, stickers, T-shirts and posters before you head home.

Encourage your children to discover new interests and talents during hands-on art experiences.

Children’s activities are available Saturday 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. While admission to the festival is free, Kids Art in the Park requires tickets at a cost of 50 cents; most activities require just one or two tickets. Your children can even paint their own artwork on the fence in Centennial Park.

Rest a few minutes while listening to top-notch local musical entertainment in front of City Hall or enjoying your favorite football team on the large screens in the Council Chambers.

Everyone is encouraged to bring a canned item to donate to Prodisee Pantry or purchase drinks that benefit this nonprofit organization’s programs.

It’s all in Daphne at the Jubilee Festival. From Highway 98, turn west onto Whispering Pines Road, then south onto Main Street. For more information, contact the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce at 251-621-8222.

Sports and Art Pair Well in Lower Alabama

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Alabama’s largest outdoor mural (two stories high) is in Daphne, Alabama, at the American Sport Art Museum & Archives.

Find out how competition and collaboration go hand-in-hand at the American Sport Art Museum & Archives in Daphne, Alabama.

An independent university, the United States Sports Academy, offers degrees to those studying the business of sports. It is the only such school in the U.S., and the largest in the world. And you’ll find it in Daphne, Alabama.

It is no coincidence that these two organizations share space. Athletic competition is really a form of artistic expression, and the artworks and literature you’ll find here capture the moments that create sports memories. It’s well worth the short drive to see what may be the world’s largest collection of sport art. Even the building has been given architectural acclaim.

Sculptures, paintings, photographs and more depict specific highlights of athletes and teams as well as overall impressions of sports. Once you have been moved by this combination of competition and interpretation, you may wish to feel a larger part of the experience by purchasing representations of the art. And for a tax-deductible donation, you may place your name on a brick on the “Walk of Fame” to help assure the future of the museum.

There’s much to appreciate about the American Sport Art Museum & Archives, so head that direction next time you’re in town. You’ll find it about 45 minutes from Gulf Shores, and just a few miles east of the USS Alabama Battleship. The hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m.–4 p.m., but be sure to leave time to choose some art, memorabilia or clothing from the gift shop. Since admission is free, you’ll be able to take something home for all your friends, too!
