Shrimp Fest Sand Sculpture Contest

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

The 40th Annual National Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama is known not only for our favorite crustacean served any way you can imagine, but also juried art and arts & crafts booths, and two stages filled with live music throughout all four days.

Put your creative skills on display during the Shrimp Fest Sand Sculpture Contest on Saturday, October 15, 2011.

One of the lesser-known attractions of Shrimp Fest, though, comes by way of the beach. The white-sand setting of the festival makes it a perfect venue for a sand sculpture contest—and you are invited to participate.

Registration and building of masterpieces will begin Saturday, October 15, at 11:00 a.m., with judging starting at 3:00 p.m.

Competition is grouped into age categories: 5–10 years, 11–15 years, 16 years and older, or Family (mixed ages). Each group will compete for trophies and ribbons, and all participants will receive a sand bucket. The contest is sponsored by Ike’s Beach Service, Inc.

From basic shapes molded by buckets or by hand to complex artistic renderings, let your creativity shine as you enjoy a picture-perfect day at the beach and at Shrimp Fest 2011. Festival hours are Thursday–Saturday, October 13–15, 10–10 and Sunday, October 16, 10–5.

If you are bringing the entire family to Shrimp Fest—and we hope you are!–you’ll want to know what there is for the kids during the festival. Check out another page on this blog to learn about the Children’s Activity Village, including the kids’ stage schedule of entertainment.

While at the festival, you won’t want to miss the wide variety of musical acts at both ends of the festival grounds. Take a look at the full line-up, including links to many of the performers, on our Shrimp Fest—East Stage and Shrimp Fest—West Stage pages.

Habitat for Humanity Chili Cook-off

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Although the weather is a little warmer than usual for late October along the Gulf Coast, the calendar says it’s time for pumpkins, fall colors, hot chocolate, and a staple of cool-weather food: Chili!

Yummy chili and much more at the Habitat for Humanity Women Build's Chili Cook-off Saturday, October 23 at Heritage Park in Foley.

Helping us get in the mood to make chili is the Habitat for Humanity of Baldwin County Women Build’s 11th Annual Chili Cook-off. But of course the real purpose is to benefit the Habitat for Humanity program.

Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity strives to “eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.” This is accomplished by gathering donated materials and volunteer labor to build or rehabilitate simple housing. A family chosen as a recipient is responsible for the downpayment and mortgage payments, and is required to be heavily involved in their construction project as well as others. As the mortgage is paid, those funds are applied toward a future project.

Like most any charitable cause, Habitat for Humanity is in need of funding. So the local folks created this fun event to raise both awareness and money. And even though it’s a chili cook-off, your low $5 admission fee gains you entry into much more than a cooking contest.

Starting at 9:00 a.m. this Saturday, October 23, you can indulge your sweet tooth with extraordinary baked goods, participate in a great silent auction and raffles, check out the antique tractors, watch a sugar cane mill and rope making, admire and purchase handmade craft items, and cheer the kids on in a Lego competition. The chili judging will be held at noon, but the day’s activities are available through 3:00 p.m. For further information, call 251-943-7268.

Join the community in support of Baldwin County’s Habitat for Humanity Women Build program. You’ll enjoy a beautiful day outdoors at Heritage Park in Foley (at the intersection of Hwys. 59 & 98), and you might even discover a new favorite chili recipe.

WINNER of Hangout Music Fest Weekend!

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

It’s official—we’ve confirmed our winner of The Hangout Music Festival Giveaway!

Excitement is building as the festival approaches! Will you be there?

When he read the e-mail indicating he had won, Robert Sinners—a master’s candidate studying public administration in Columbia, South Carolina—was apprehensive, admitting concern that it might be a joke. But after speaking with Corporate PR Director Sarah Kuzma, he soon realized that the prize was real, and his skepticism turned to excitement.

Robert’s $1,300 prize includes a 3-night stay in a 2-bedroom, gulf-front condominium within walking distance of the festival site. Along with the accommodations, Robert and a guest will be treated to three full days of nearly 60 great bands on the beautiful Alabama coastline.

When he arrives, Robert will be given a disposable camera to capture The Hangout Beach, Music & Arts Festival from his viewpoint. We will share some of those photos with you, so be sure to bookmark or follow Meyer Real Estate on any of our social media outlets (see below).

It’s not too late! You can still be a part of this inaugural music event at the beach. See the lineup of the bands and listen to their music. Purchase your 3-day pass or single-day tickets today at Hangout Music Festival. Then save 25–33% on accommodations when you rent a condo or house through Meyer Real Estate.

Don’t miss your chance to be a part of history at the first Hangout Beach, Music & Arts Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama, during May 14 through 16, 2010!
