A View From the Top

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

Do you find yourself imagining the glorious view from one of our area’s penthouses? Do you wish you could take a peek into—and out of—one of those luxurious, top-floor residences? This Saturday, you can stop imagining and let your eyes take in the View From the Top.

Caribe, Phoenix West, Oceania, Spanish Key, La Serena, Sea Chase, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Alabama, Perdido Key, Florida

Tour 6 exquisite penthouses with gorgeous views this Saturday to help Sirens of the Sea award scholarships and assist Mary's Shelter.

The Sirens of the Sea organization presents this 5th annual tour of condos and penthouses to raise funds for their scholarship awarded to a local high school senior, and to give assistance to Mary’s Shelter, a provider of family-style living for homeless mothers-to-be. Your $20 admission helps to make both of these programs possible.

This year’s tour includes six exquisite residences on the gulf and the bay in Gulf Shores (Oceania), Orange Beach (Phoenix West, Sea Chase, Caribe) and Perdido Key (Spanish Key, La Serena). When you purchase your tickets, you will receive directions to each building, plus six raffle tickets. A beautiful basket will be on display at each property, along with a list of its contents; simply place your ticket(s) in the raffle jar(s) of your choice for your chance to win. Plan to stay long enough at each location to absorb the view as you chat with friendly folks and snack on delicious treats.

Simply go to any of the properties Saturday, February 4, 2012, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to purchase your six-property pass and begin your tour. For advance purchase, you may contact Peggy Martin at 251-942-6440 or Century 21 Meyer Real Estate agent Angela Martin at 251-923-6082.

Early Bird New Year’s Eve Bash

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Let’s face it: Even those who enjoy a good party don’t necessarily want to stay out until midnight or beyond. That can create a bit of a challenge on New Year’s Eve when midnight is the focal point of the celebration.

new year's eve, 2011, 2012, gulf shores, alabama

Enjoy a New Year's Eve party in Gulf Shores, Alabama that won't keep you up past midnight.

But if you are in the Gulf Shores area, consider the issue solved. Come to the Early Bird New Year’s Eve Bash created for people just like you! Listen or dance to top-notch live music, compete in the table decoration contest if you wish, celebrate the close of 2011 and the birth of 2012, and let your presence there be your final good deed of this year.

To get the most out of the evening, plan to be at the Erie Meyer Civic Center when the doors open at 6 p.m. this Saturday, December 31. Bring festive decorations for your table, but please leave the confetti, glitter and open flames at home. The table with the most outrageous decor gets bragging rights and a little something from the musical star of the evening.

Beginning at 7:00, the 2011 Trop Rock Singer/Songwriter of the Year, Brent Burns, will be sharing his popular blend of covers and original music, including a number of humorous musical commentaries for which he is well known.

The food will be perfect, as you will be supplying your own snacks and drinks. (Alcohol is allowed; please drink responsibly.) Bring enough goodies for just you, or plenty to share—whatever makes you happy. After all, it’s your party!

The $15 advance tickets are available at the Christian Service Center, 317 Dolphin Avenue in Gulf Shores, open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to noon; cash or checks are accepted. You may also purchase admission through the Brent Burns website or by calling 251- 948-8863; or pay $20 at the door (space permitting). Book an entire table of 8 for $120 and you will have reserved seating. All proceeds benefit the Christian Service Center, a 100% volunteer organization that gives a hand up, not a hand out, to those in need.

Come join us at the beach to ring in the new year. We’ll even give you TWO FREE NIGHTS! Grab a buddy or your significant other and relax in a cozy 1-bedroom property in Gulf Shores or bring another couple or a few friends to share a 2-bedroom Fort Morgan condo.

Weeks Bay Ornament 2011

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

The environmentalist. The volunteer. The nature lover. The person who has everything. The proud local. The appreciative visitor. The ecotourist. The science teacher or student.

Weeks Bay Foundation ornament 2011, kayak, fisherman, fishing

Your gift to a friend or family member also supports Weeks Bay Foundation programs.

Many of us fit into at least one of those categories. And we know of one particular gift item that will satisfy any or all of these folks.

When you give someone a 2011 Weeks Bay ornament that commemorates the 25th anniversary of the designation of the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, you give much more than a simple gift to a friend or family member. You also support the natural environments of our area and beyond.

Current programs of the Weeks Bay Foundation include submerged equipment, weather stations and sampling projects to monitor water quality. And their ongoing objective is to purchase land in the Weeks Bay watershed that may be added to the National Wildlife Reserve, or be set aside with a conservation easement such as to preserve a wildlife habitat, or create a buffer to conservation lands.

You have four options for securing this decorative item that depicts a fisherman in a kayak. The best value is a combination ornament and one-year membership in the Weeks Bay Foundation for just $50. Send an ornament with a holiday card that includes your personal greeting for just $20, shipping included. Ornaments alone are $15 online, or you may purchase them in person for $12 at Fairhope Pharmacy’s Christmas ’Round the Corner or the Weeks Bay Reserve at 11401 U.S. Hwy. 98 in Fairhope (251-990-5004).

Marty McIntosh CD Release Party

Thursday, December 1st, 2011

Gulf Shores resident Marty McIntosh is bringing a taste of Nashville to town. To celebrate his first CD, he will perform some of the music from it, and then enjoy meet-and-greet time with his local fans. Rumor has it that a special appearance will be made by country music great David Frizzell, too.

Marty McIntosh CD Release Party, Gulf Shores, Alabama, music, country, Cohiba Dunes Cigar Bar

Celebrate country artist Marty McIntosh's The American Night CD release in Gulf Shores Friday, December 2, 2011.

Marty’s CD, The American Night, was recorded in Nashville for the Nashville America Records label. The first single—the title track—has been on the radio, and the second single, “She Makes Me Look Good,” has recently arrived at the radio stations.

Marty wanted to bring a bit of the Nashville culture to his hometown, to show his appreciation for those who have supported him. But he also believes strongly in the importance of community, so he has made this CD release party about more than just himself or his fans. The admission fee of $10 will be waived if you bring a new, unwrapped gift to donate to Toys for Tots, and a portion of all album sales during the release party will go to this organization. (Hint: A CD would make a great gift or stocking stuffer!)

Come party and hear some fun new music at Cohiba Dunes Cigar Bar in the Pelican Place Shopping Center just north of the Gulf Shores island. The event is scheduled for 7–9 p.m. this Friday, December 2, 2011.

Christmas Open House in Gulf Shores

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

The twinkling lights in stores and on houses, the oversized plastic candy canes and snowflakes attached to the city’s light poles, the wreaths in the windows, the seasonal music in stores and on the radio . . . there’s no mistaking it—it’s Christmas time!

Christmas, holiday, open house, Gulf Shores, Alabama, Santa

Share the holiday cheer with your neighbors at the City of Gulf Shores' Christmas Open House on Thursday, December 1, 2011.

Your entire family is invited to celebrate as a community (whether you are a resident or visitor) when the City of Gulf Shores opens its doors Thursday, December 1 at 6:00 p.m.

You’ll find an abundance of holiday joy spread among four locations, all within walking distance of each other: Gulf Shores Museum, Thomas B. Norton Public Library, Erie Meyer Civic Center and Bodenhamer Recreation Center. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there, joined by some of their elves to help with photo opportunities (bring your camera!) and hand out treats. Whether listening or dancing, you’ll enjoy music by the Mobile Symphony Brass Quintet and Brent Burns. Crafts, stories, and activities such as a moonwalk bounce house will keep the children entertained, and everyone will marvel at the train sets, award-winning gingerbread houses and holiday village.

You can pick up a schedule of entertainment at any of the four locations mentioned above or South Baldwin Community Theater, or you may call 251-968-1172 for more information. And please plan to arrive with a gift to donate to Toys for Tots so that less-fortunate children also may feel the warmth of the holiday season.

Benefit Times Two Saturday at The Hangout

Friday, November 18th, 2011

The Hangout in Gulf Shores is wonderfully active in the community, whether supplying entertainment (such as The Hangout Music Fest), hosting contests (including the Oyster Cook-off), or welcoming organizations that choose the restaurant as a home base for special fundraising activities.

Ta Ta Ride, motorcycle, The Hangout, fundraiser, breast cancer research, Alabama Sheriff's Youth Ranch

All-day fun at The Hangout on Saturday, November 19, to benefit breast cancer research and offer a safe haven for children.

This Saturday, November 19, 2011, combines two different causes into one fun event to benefit breast cancer research and to provide a safe home for needy, neglected and abused children.

The 1st Annual Ta Ta Ride is to raise awareness and money for UAB’s breast cancer research. Ta Ta Towing donates 10% of every tow to this program, so it’s fitting that they are presenting the motorcycle ride/poker run. Register Friday evening at The Hangout’s pre-party between 5 and 8 p.m., or sign up Saturday morning between 9 and 11 a.m. for the 11:00 ride that begins and ends at The Hangout. The fee for each bike is $30, and $10 extra for a passenger. It’s a good thing the weather should be in the mid-70s, as it is strongly suggested that all bikers – gals AND GUYS – dress in a bikini top.

The after party at The Hangout runs from 5 until 9 p.m., and is open to the public. Included will be games such as a frozen T-shirt contest, a men’s bikini top contest ($200 prize!), a cash raffle and a Dyna Super Glide 100th Anniversary Edition raffle. A $500 prize will be awarded for the best poker hand collected during the ride. Music will be provided by Foxy Iguanas, fronted by Smokey Otis; their family-friendly show begins at 7 p.m., with an adult show following at 11 p.m.

You can party all day or evening, but be sure to arrive before 6 p.m., as a pair of Iron Bowl tickets will be up for grabs in a live auction. The Iron Bowl (just a small contest between Auburn and Alabama) will be played Saturday, November 26, so this will be quite a competitive auction so close to the event date. And your bid supports the Alabama Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch in Summerdale—100% of the money raised will help give school-age children a better life.

Plan for a full day of fun that will benefit good causes. You are promised an enjoyable and appropriate start to your Thanksgiving week. Need more details? Call 251-752-1110 or 251-978-3990.
