Godspell has played across the world to rave reviews for more than 35 years, and it has finally arrived on the Alabama Gulf Coast.

For the 6th year, Gulf Shores area residents and guests are invited to enjoy a fun, energetic musical theater presentation during the month of June, thanks to an arrangement with University of Alabama’s Department of Theatre and Dance and a number of interested sponsors. Godspell certainly fits the bill.

Throughout the show, the 8-member cast recreates some of the parables found in the gospel according to St. Matthew. While this may sound like a heavy theme, the mood is anything but serious. The characters are silly, funny, excited, even childlike in their enthusiasm and joy.

The performers in this troupe may be of college age, but their rendition of Godspell is professional quality. Almost never do any actors leave the stage, making the roles rather demanding in spite of the lightheartedness. But with the strong talent onstage and off, the energy never sags and the pacing is tight.

Produced on Broadway in 1971, Godspell’s Grammy award-winning score includes the international hit “Day By Day.” The music was created by Stephen Schwartz, the same man who more recently composed the music for Wicked. Each of the cast members is the lead vocalist on at least one song, and the musical styles draw from Vaudeville to folk/pop to rock, rap and more.

SummerTide Theatre—where Broadway meets the beach. Don’t miss your opportunity to see this upbeat rock musical while visiting the white sands of the Alabama Gulf Coast. Shows continue nightly through July 3, except Mondays; curtain is at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the performance site—George C.
