Alabama’s Beaches: Pristine, Playful, Refreshing & Relaxing

We hear it all the time. “Alabama has beaches?” Why, yes, as a matter of fact. Alabama DOES have beaches—and they are some of the most stunning white-sand beaches in the world.

Our little slice of pure paradise, recognized as one of the best Gulf Coast beaches according to the Travel Channel, stretches east nearly 40 miles from Fort Morgan to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama, and to Perdido Key, Florida.

Each beach community has its own distinct personality and is uniquely appealing to vacationers, making the area perfect for a quick weekend getaway, a weeklong vacation or even a month-long (or longer) stay in the wintertime.

Gulf Shores (Search Available Properties)
Gulf Shores, AlabamaWith its earliest beginnings as a sleepy beach town that was home to local fishermen, Gulf Shores today is a friendly, bustling beach community known for its welcoming locals; family-oriented amusements; variety of on- and off-beach boutiques for shopping; hiking and biking trails; Gulf State Park; and other opportunities for exploration.

One of the most popular areas is the main Gulf Shores Public Beach area, located at the intersection of Ala. Hwy. 59 and Ala. Hwy. 182, also known as the Beach Road.

Nearby, you will find the iconic Hangout Restaurant and entertainment venue, numerous large surf and beach shops, the always fun Pink Pony Pub, and several restaurants.

This main public beach entrance is also where the annual Hangout Music Fest, the National Annual Shrimp Festival, and sporting events, such as NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships, are held. With a pedestrian-friendly boardwalk, plenty of parking and green spaces, visitors are drawn to this area all year long.

Gulf Shores is also home to restaurants to suit every palate and budget, golf courses, Gulf State Park, and fun attractions like Waterville USA and The Track Family Recreation Center, to keep kids of all ages busy.

Fort Morgan (Search Available Properties)

Fort Morgan, AlabamaJust west of Gulf Shores is Fort Morgan, an area some like to call “the quiet side of paradise.”

At the end of the Fort Morgan peninsula, where Mobile Bay meets the Gulf of Mexico, is a historic Civil War fort, inviting visitors to walk where soldiers lived and worked. Go at the right time, and you might even get to hear the cannon fired and see living history actors perform the duties of soldiers and those who supported their efforts. It’s a must-see when you visit this area for sure.

Fort Morgan is also home to several laid-back seafood restaurants, beach accesses, charter fishing operations and the 6,000-acre Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, a great spot to experience nature and see coastal wildlife up close and personal.

Orange Beach (Search Available Properties)
Orange Beach, AlabamaWith its roots in fishing, Orange Beach is a fisherman’s paradise. The city is home to one of the region’s largest fleets of charter fishing boats, so it’s a breeze to book a fishing trip either on the Gulf of Mexico or in the area’s beautiful back bays.

There are also numerous dolphin, nature and even dinner cruise excursions to enjoy.

A favorite activity of locals and visitors is a boating trip out to the “islands” of Robinson Island and Boat Island. Purchased by the city of Orange Beach to protect them and the wildlife that nests there from being developed, the islands are sanctuaries for nesting birds and have sensitive grass beds. While people must avoid certain sensitive areas, there are beach areas where boaters are welcomed to dock, grill and play. On busy days, it is not uncommon to see a line of boats anchored just off the islands.

Restaurants in Orange Beach range from camp-styled seafood shacks like Doc’s to fine dining restaurants like Cobalt or Cosmo’s.

Orange Beach also features numerous amusements and beach shops for boutique browsers. Perhaps the pinnacle of entertainment is The Wharf, where restaurants, a movie theater, shops and restaurants may be explored. Also on site at The Wharf is a 10,000-seat outdoor amphitheater, where entertainers ranging from Jimmy Buffett to Alabama perform. See concert schedule here.

Perdido Key (Search Available Properties)
Perdido Key, AlabamaJust east of Orange Beach and across the Florida state line is an area known for its abundant federal and state parklands. The barrier island of Perdido Key is peaceful and consistently ranks among the nation’s top 20 beaches as named by “Dr. Beach.”

A little busier part of the Key is the spot where you’ll find the famous Flora-Bama Lounge, Package and Oyster Bar, home of the annual Interstate Mullet Toss, an event that is truly unlike any other! Always held in April, this event draws thousands to the beach in front of the iconic gathering spot to toss a mullet (dead, of course) across the state line. Throw it the farthest in your category, and you win!

Other unique must-do events in Perdido Key include the Frank Brown International Songwriter’s Festival, the New Year’s Polar Bear Dip and the Perdido Key Wine Festival.

Places to explore the bountiful natural beauty of Perdido Key include Lost Key Golf Club, a designated Audubon Signature Cooperative Sanctuary golf course, and Gulf Islands National Seashore, where you’ll find Fort Pickens and Fort McRee, which defended Pensacola Bay during the Civil War.

Whatever type of beach experience you are looking for—quiet, busy, fun-filled, focused on nature—the beaches of the Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast will fill the bill.

Whole House, Whole Family, Whole Lot Of Room

Part of the wonder of a vacation, whether traveling alone or with family and friends, is experiencing something that takes you outside the realm of ordinary life—new destinations or exciting attractions, perhaps.

An important component of the overall vacation experience that builds anticipation and generates excitement is the joy of finding the perfect accommodations.

Vacation rental houses at the beach are gaining popularity among travelers who are in search of an accommodations experience that goes far beyond what the typical cookie-cutter hotel room can provide.

More Space, Less Money

In a Meyer Vacation Rentals beach house, you and your friends and family can stay under one roof, with everyone able to enjoy more space at a lower price than they would in a hotel room. When you rent a house from Meyer, you will pay up to 50% less per square foot than you would in the average hotel room, making traveling with others even more economical when costs are shared.

A typical hotel room, at just over 300 square feet, simply does not offer the space that a Meyer Vacation Rentals house, ranging from just under 1,000 square feet and one bedroom like Plum Cute all the way up to more than 10,000 square feet and 20 bedrooms like Pearl, can offer.

Some of Meyer’s houses with numerous bedrooms even have multiple master suites and balconies or decks, giving family branches the opportunity to enjoy scenic views of the Gulf, lagoon, bay, golf course or other vistas in the privacy of their own spaces.

In a beach house, vacationers may also huddle in spaces like the living room, kitchen, dining room, media rooms, private balconies or other spots designed especially for allowing friends and family to catch up, play games or even do nothing at all.

Making Meyer’s beach houses so unique is that each one is individually owned and decorated, with owners taking great care to incorporate a coastal themed decor.

With the ability to accommodate more guests comes the need for everyone to be able to wash clothes, towels and swimsuits. All Meyer houses are furnished with washers and dryers and sometimes even multiple units.

Cook In Or Have A Meal Catered

In a beach house, it’s easy to dine in or prepare meals in your fully equipped kitchen. Or, if you have a large group and have rented a house with a sizeable kitchen, you might even want to consider having a special meal catered, perhaps for a wedding party.

Many of Meyer’s houses feature kitchens that are caterer friendly, with more than one refrigerator, stove, icemaker and dishwasher, and lots of countertop and cabinet space.

The Extras

Beach houses often have many of the same amenities you would find in a resort-styled condo complex, either on site at the house or within the community.

Some have private pools and hot tubs, game rooms, Jacuzzi tubs, exercise rooms and more, while others offer access to amenities like golf courses, pools, hot tubs and tennis courts.

For example, vacationers staying at one of Meyer’s houses within the Cottages at Romar neighborhood in Orange Beach enjoy access to the community zero-entry, saltwater pool; a cozy fire pit; bathhouses; a private access beach with walkover; and gated entry.

If you want to bring your dog, Meyer has more than 50 houses that are dog-friendly, including many in Fort Morgan, where leashed dogs are allowed on the beaches.

Another bonus when renting one of Meyer’s beach houses is that the majority of them are equipped with coded keyless entry locks, meaning you are able to bypass the rental office and check in directly to your house. Key codes are provided via text or email for participating houses.

Meyer’s beach houses in Gulf Shores, Fort Morgan, Orange Beach and Perdido Key fill quickly for popular vacation weeks. Make your selection now for your preferred week.

A Beach House for How Many People?

Halekai III

A large beach house may just be the perfect answer to your group's next multiple-night business or social gathering.

When you are planning a family reunion, business retreat or church gathering that requires a few nights in one location, does your mind immediately jump to an impersonal hotel, or maybe a group of separate condos near each other?

Why not consider everyone staying together in one house at the beach? Below are six Gulf Shores houses in Meyer Real Estate’s vacation rental program that will accommodate 22 to 32 people. Follow the links to see virtual tours and photos, learn more about the amenities offered at each property, and check dates of availability.

Egret, 4 miles west of the north-south AL Hwy. 59 that ends at the beach in Gulf Shores, is a one-story house that is deceptively large. Its six bedrooms combine king, queen, double and twin beds; when the 3 sleeper sofas are included, 22 people can call this gulf-front location “home.”

Avocet also sleeps 22 in its two-level, 4200-square-foot house located gulf-front almost 14 miles down Fort Morgan Road in the Surfside Shores subdivision. The five bedrooms include king, queen, bunk and double futon configurations.

Aqua Vista is a new home on West Beach, just three miles from the main beach intersection. With eight bedrooms and baths divided among three levels, 23 people can share the gulf-front house and still enjoy a bit of privacy within its 4000 square feet. Bedding includes king, queen, bunk and triple bunks as well as a sleeper sofa.

Erica’s Sandpiper is another eight-bedroom/eight-bath home that can be shared by 24 relatives or friends. A combination of king, queen, double, twin and sleeper sofas are found within this 3800-square-foot, single-level gulf-front home. You’ll find it in a quiet area 4 miles down West Beach.

Halekai III boasts 8000 square feet near the end of West Beach. The 11 bedrooms and bathrooms can accommodate 29 people among the king, queen, sofa queen, bunk and day beds. Numerous extras, including a media room, two kitchens and three living rooms, make it possible for purely fun or all-business gatherings to be comfortable at this gulf-front location.

Ranch Beach House is owned by a non-profit agency, with proceeds benefiting a children’s charity. Its 2600 square feet are spread over two levels, including six bedrooms, six and a half baths and two living rooms. Bedding consists of king, double, twin and triple bunk configurations, making it ideal for family, corporate or church groups. This house that sleeps 32 is adjacent to the pass on West Beach, across the street from the gulf.

The time is right to plan for next week’s or next year’s cozy weekend for two, family getaway, corporate team-building week, or large-scale celebration. Choose from 1600 condos and 300 houses on or near the beach or golf course. We’re eager to delight you with our renowned STAR Treatment!
