For many people, a Cajun celebration may not be the first thing that comes to mind for Labor Day. But why not?

Party Cajun-style at The Hangout this Labor Day Weekend!
Unless you are from Louisiana, you may not even know what “Cajun” means, much less what kind of celebrating it might describe. If so, it’s time to change that! This Labor Day Weekend is your chance to party like a Cajun, whether as second nature or for the very first time.
The folks at The Hangout in Gulf Shores, Alabama—yes, where Highway 59 ends, right on the beach—are making it easy to live it up. The three-day festivities begin at 3:00 p.m. this Friday, August 27, and each night it doesn’t wind down until 2:00 a.m.
During this time, you’ll enjoy Cochon de liat, a traditional pig roast. You’ll also be treated to zydeco music all weekend, including dance music from the Mermaid Stage. A free family show by Jamie Bergeron and the Kickin’ Cajuns will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening. Saturday’s special guests are Don Fontenot and Lez Ami de La Louisianne beginning at 7:00 p.m. And Sunday at 8:00 p.m. is another lively show with Wayne Toups.
It’s not too late to plan your road trip to the party. In fact, Meyer Real Estate has teamed up with The Hangout for the weekend and beyond, offering 50% off accommodations plus a $50 Hangout gift card. See the details and reserve your beach headquarters online. This is a celebration you don’t want to miss!

Live music and a good cause seem to go hand-in-hand. So kicking off a month of fund-raising and awareness with two regionally popular musical acts is a great idea—especially when the party is located at a favorite local eatery and sponsored in part by a Southeastern craft brewery!

The fundraising fun begins at "SweetWater 4:20 p.m." on Sunday, August 1 at The Hangout in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Support the Save the Gulf program!
Save the Gulf is a program of the Mobile Baykeepers organization, whose mission is to provide citizens a means to protect the beauty, health and heritage of the Mobile Bay Watershed. By attending any of their fund-raising events, your donation will assist with their hands-on activities and their awareness campaigns.
August 1, 2010, is the first day of the Save the Gulf campaign. Through Labor Day, you are encouraged to participate as often as possible in their efforts and to help spread the word about the work they do to keep our waterways clean and ecologically sound.
The first event will be held at The Hangout in Gulf Shores, so plan to have dinner there while enjoying the performances.
For a donation of only $10, you will be treated to the music of Wes Loper, who combines country, rock, folk, beach and blues styles to make his mark on the music world. His appearance alone would be more than worth the small donation, but with a start time of “SweetWater 4:20 p.m.,” that’s just the first part of the event. Following him is Wet Willie with Jimmy Hall and the Hurricane Horns, cranking up their Southern rock sounds with high energy.
Between songs, be sure to tell the folks from SweetWater Brewing Company how much you appreciate their involvement in this and other environmental programs they support.

You already know that a beach vacation is what you want, and you need that getaway sooner rather than later. Things are hectic at home or at work—or maybe both—and it’s been a long, cold winter. You need a little “Ahhh…” factor infused into your life.

The beach offers an escape from the everyday life, even if only for a few days.
What if we offered you a chance to get a free night in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach or Fort Morgan, Alabama, or Perdido Key, Florida? Meyer Real Estate always gives you the seventh night free. (Actually, you can get your sixth and seventh nights free if you stay by May 26 – click here to get the scoop.)
Are time constraints keeping you from enjoying an entire week at the beach?
No problem! Stay just three nights or four. If you choose a condo, your third night is free. Opt for a house and you’ll get your fourth night free.
Your schedule will only allow two or three nights? Just use your free night as an extended check-out. Sleep in on that last morning, spend the afternoon at the beach, and maybe hang around for dinner before heading home again.
Not once, but TWICE in the next four weeks you’ll find a commemorative day paired with a special offer of third or fourth night free:
* Celebrate Mother Earth when you opt for the Earth Day special and stay between April 20 and 26, 2010. Enjoy nature-related activities such as hiking, biking or birding.
* Celebrate family ties when you opt for the Mother’s Day special and stay between May 5 and 11, 2010. Let Mom choose to shop, dine out or admire items at an arts & crafts fair.
Let Meyer Real Estate’s specials and extra-large variety of vacation properties make it easier to reward yourself with a much-needed beach escape!

If you are anywhere near Elberta, Alabama this Saturday, the aroma of the secret-recipe sausage being cooked over an open flame will lure you in. Even if you’ve never attended the German Sausage Festival, it’s quite easy to find the main attraction—just inhale the delicious scent and you’ll be led straight to the tasty treasure.
Smother your sausage in tangy sauerkraut and other flavorful enhancements, or enjoy it plain. Either way, you’ll know you’ve hit upon something special. If you prefer, order a hot dog, hamburger or BBQ sandwich. Supplement your main course with German-style filled cabbage, goulash, red beans and rice, or potato salad. Don’t forget the treats afterward: Ice cream, peanuts and popcorn round out the festival foods.
Some of the individual vendors serve up their own baked or canned goods, so be prepared to take home an edible souvenir or two. Among the 250 booths, you will find artisans of all types displaying and selling their handmade wares. Kids’ carnival rides and all-day live entertainment encourage plenty of family time to build memories.
Although the festival runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, word on the street suggests arriving before 3 p.m., as it’s not unusual to sell out of the 7000 pounds of sausage by then.
You’ll find the festival situated at the intersection of Hwy. 98 and Co. Rd. 83 in downtown Elberta, just a few minutes east of Foley. If you can’t make it this weekend, you will get another opportunity in the fall; the German Sausage Festival is held the last Saturdays of March and October each year.
Join the Elberta Volunteer Fire Department and the city of Elberta in this hugely popular fund-raising event. After all, 32 years of sell-out sausage proves that this is the place to be!
