Broadway Music in Gulf Shores

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

“Follow the Yellow Brick Road” to a memory-filled evening of Broadway songs presented by the Chancel Choir of Gulf Shores United Methodist Church.

Some of your favorite Broadway music will play near the coast Sunday, August 29, 2010.

Although Gulf Shores is a little more than “Forty-Five Minutes from Broadway,” “The Music of the Night” will be taken from four hit Broadway shows: The Wizard of Oz, Grease, Phantom of the Opera and George M! These musicals were carefully chosen to represent music and theater from different eras, enhancing the entertainment impact. You are sure to know some—or maybe all!—of the much-loved songs, making it a fun way to spend one of the year’s last “Summer Nights.”

The tiny $5 donation per ticket for the 7th Annual Evening of Broadway helps to fund not only the music ministry of the church, but also community concerts throughout the year. Tickets for the 7:00 p.m. performance may be purchased ahead of time at the church office or at the door. You’ll find the church on Hwy. 59, next to the Winn Dixie shopping center. For more details, call 251-968-2411.

Birthday Bash at The Hot Shop

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

You may not remember the day you were born or your first birthday, but the folks at Orange Beach Arts Center and The Hot Shop are full of first-year memories and excitement for the future of Alabama’s only public-access glass studio.

You're invited to a birthday bash for The Hot Shop at the Orange Beach Arts Center on Friday, August 20, 2010.

And what a fun evening they have planned to mark the occasion!

From 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, August 20, you’ll be treated to a Hot Glass Cold Drinks celebration. Food and drinks are just the beginning, accompanied by the uplifting, sophisticated guitar sounds of Roman Street.

Wander through the Arts Center and around the grounds, and you’ll find all kinds of artistic activities in progress. Glass-blowing demonstrations will be offered by Mark Lupeta, Steve and Dee Burrow will show their process of pottery making, and Opal Young will invite you to watch as she creates a painting.

A public mosaic project will be led by Connie Blum, so don’t pass up your opportunity to add your personal touch. “Bob” the Art Car will be making a special appearance. And you know you can’t pass up a chance at a raffle, especially when it will benefit the Arts Center.

This Birthday Bash is also the opening of the 2010 Members Show. Check out new works by your favorite artists while you discover some new favorites to admire.

Learn more by contacting the Arts Center at 251-981-2787—or simply show up and talk to the Arts Center folks at 26389 Canal Rd. in Orange Beach, east of the Hwy. 161 intersection.

Historic Home and Heritage Quilts in Bon Secour

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Through September 28, you have TWO great reasons to visit the historic Swift-Coles Home in Bon Secour, Alabama.

Beautiful heritage quilts in a lovely historic home. See both when you visit the Swift-Cole Home in Bon Secour, Alabama.

The house, listed on the registry of Alabama Historical Landmarks since 1978, was built on the Bon Secour River banks circa 1882. Many accounts of ghostly sightings have been reported, describing scenes with Civil War soldiers, servants and guests.

We can’t promise apparitions, but we can promise a lovely exhibit of a material kind.

Rare heritage quilts and educational information have been gathered by members of the Island Quilters Guild. In the family parlor of the Swift-Coles Home, visitors may examine a quilting frame and learn about the process of quilting a dogwood pattern. A display describing the history of quilting is accompanied by some of the typical quilting patterns.

Once you better understand what the craft is all about, take your time as you wander through the 16-room home. In each area, you’ll be impressed by the artistry of stitched, appliquéd or embroidered quilts of many colors and interesting patterns.

To admire the quilts, feel free to stop by any Tuesday or Friday through September 28, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Admission to the Swift-Cole House, located at the end of Co. Rd. 49 in Bon Secour, is just $5. Further details are available by calling the Baldwin County Department of History and Archives at 251-580-1897.

Free Concert Aug. 12: Great American Classics

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Versatile vocalist Doug Breau brings the songs you love to the Erie Meyer Civic Center in the next Gulf Shores Out & In presentation.

Free musical entertainment with Doug Breau on Thursday, August 12, at Gulf Shores' Erie Meyer Civic Center.

Doug segues between country & western favorites and popular standards, and talks to a large audience as easily as he would to a few friends in his living room. He loves what he does and truly enjoys sharing his music with all ages. This particular show will highlight music from the 1940s through the 1970s.

Joining Doug on the stage will be Katie Belle, 1991 Female Vocalist winner of an amateur talent contest sponsored by the Country Music Association in northern New England. When Doug and Katie met, they knew they would enjoy working together, so they often appear on each other’s shows.

The indoor concert begins at 7:00 p.m.—and admission is free, so don’t miss it. You’ll find the Civic Center at the corner of W. 19th Ave. and W. 2nd St., just a few blocks northwest of the Hwy. 59/Fort Morgan Rd. intersection.

The last two shows in the 2010 Gulf Shores Out & In series will be August 26, indoors, with The Heltons, and September 9, outdoors, with Brent Burns.

Cheer Up With the Art of “Just Us Folks”

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Scott Thomas and Bonnie Gravette share their joyful artworks at Orange Beach Art Center through Aug. 19, 2010.

They have created a stir. In fact, enough buzz that the folks at the Orange Beach Art Center have asked them to hang around an extra couple of weeks.

What is even more interesting is that it’s their first time to show on the Alabama Gulf Coast. (We’ll guess that it won’t be their last.)

Since June 5, Bonnie Gravette of Memphis, Tennessee and Scott Thomas of Cloudland, Georgia have shared their brightly colored, whimsical artwork with our part of the world. And the timing of it—purely by fate—couldn’t be better to lift our spirits. Passing through the exhibit, you’ll feel lighter and you’ll find yourself smiling, magically touched by the fun combinations of hues and subjects.

Need a little stress relief? You’ll find it Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., in the Visiting Artist Gallery through August 20. While you are there, take pleasure in viewing all the wonderful local art on display and for sale, and watch artists at work in Alabama’s only public-use glass studio, The Hot Shop.

Exchange your routine—and the heat!—for some cheery art gazing. And if you find you just can’t leave that happy feeling behind, the artists have made their works available for very reasonable prices.

Mithril: Free Concert Thursday in Gulf Shores

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Mist glitter.

High-energy Celtic music by the renowned quartet Mithril can be heard for free in Gulf Shores on July 22.

That term evokes a beautiful scene of peacefulness, sometimes stirred by lively winds, but unbroken by human voices. In the fictional Elvish language of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world, it would be pronounced “mithril”—and a local group named Mithril succeeds at creating such a scenario through their music.

Lift your spirits with Mithril’s unique style of “Celtic Pops” on Thursday, July 22, as part of the free Gulf Shores Out & In concert series. You’ll hear Celtic/world music with influences of classical, Middle Eastern and American folk styles. The four talented members are fun to watch as they play a diverse range of instruments, and their classical training is evident in the group’s effortless precision.

Mithril’s upbeat show will begin at 7:00 p.m. indoors at the Erie Meyer Civic Center in Gulf Shores, corner of W. 19th Ave. and W. 2nd St.

Grab your family and some friends, and start the fun in the afternoon with a trip to the Gulf Shores Museum (free admission, open until 5:00 p.m.) to learn of the area’s history, including shrimping and hurricanes. Chat over a delicious dinner at any of the island’s restaurants or enjoy a picnic dinner in the park. Then spend the evening tappin’ your toes to live music.

“Free” is always a good thing, and so is the music of Mithril.
