Beachy Pinspiration: the Fashion Edition

Monday, December 2nd, 2013

It’s not even winter yet, and we’ve got beach on the brain. The cold season never lasts long around here, but even if you aren’t feeling the heat quite yet, it’s always good to keep a little beachy inspiration with you on a cold day. Our staff mermaid has some stylish picks to kick start your Pinterest and maybe even your holiday wish list!

Black Pearls from Pearl Love!

Black pearls are so beautiful and won’t get washed out against our white sand! Adorn yourself with nature’s finest. They were also featured on the latest Hunger Games movie. I predict they’ll be everywhere for 2014.

Elven Forest Hooded Swimsuit Bikini Top

I love the hood on this bikini top. You can use it to shield your face or shoulders from an abundance of sun or remove it when you just want a standard bikini top. I can also see this being a great addition to your Hangout Fest wardrobe!

Sand Volleyball Competition

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

Some would insist that the best place to play volleyball is on the beach. We do agree, but we’d have to take it a step further and say that the best place is on OUR beach!

Collegiate Women's Sand Volleyball Championship Tournament Gulf Shores Alabama

Cheer on your favorite collegiate women's sand volleyball teams and duos as they compete April 27-29 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

And that’s exactly what the American Volleyball Coaches Association determined. You will understand when you come to the Gulf Shores Public Beach this weekend, April 27–29, 2012.

The first AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships will crown a team winner from four top women’s collegiate teams (College of Charleston, Florida State University, Long Beach State University and Pepperdine). Elimination rounds begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the final matchup at 5 p.m.

Beginning Friday at 11 a.m. is a 16-team pairs competition featuring the best duos from the University of Southern California, the University of Hawai’i, Florida Atlantic University, the University of Alabama-Birmingham, the University of North Florida and Stetson University, as well as the No. 1 and No. 2 duos from the four schools in the team championship. The single-elimination tournament will culminate with finals Sunday morning at 8, and the championship round at 11 a.m.

Junior and adult tournaments will also be played throughout the weekend. You’ll be treated to free live music Saturday evening beginning at 7 p.m. when Scars on 45 and ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) perform as part of The Road to The Hangout concert series. And if you are present for the Sunday morning playoffs, you can register for a chance for free tickets to the sold-out Hangout Music Fest to be held May 18–20, with the winner announced at approximately noon.

CBS Sports Network will be there to film the weekend’s events for two one-hour broadcast segments scheduled for June 6 and 13. Spectators are welcome to view any and all activities, and admission is free. Be spontaneous—join us for this exciting weekend!

New Year’s Eve with Kristy Lee at The Hangout

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

The New Year’s Eve dilemma: Do you go out, stay in, or even stay up?

New Year's Eve, Kristy Lee, Fire and Ice, The Hangout, Gulf Shores, Alabama, party

The Fire and Ice Party for New Year's Eve at The Hangout features Kristy Lee and much more.

The Hangout is making your choice easy this year with the Fire & Ice New Year’s Eve party—a don’t-miss concert, a hugely popular DJ and a burlesque dance show, plus a champagne toast and finger food at midnight. And you just might win a pair of tickets to The Hangout Music Fest!

The concert artist is the sensational Kristy Lee. This Mobile gal is just finishing a tour with the legendary Leon Russell, and she will soon be appearing on select national tour dates with G. Love and Special Sauce. Her smooth, powerful voice and special brand of music will pull you in to listen and pull you out on the dance floor.

DJ Tony Skratchere of New Orleans brings his mix of 80s smooth rock spiced with New Orleans bounce, hip hop and exceptional turntablism. When the burlesque show dancers take the stage, be ready to feel the heat.

Watch the countdown to 2012 as the balloon drops, toast the moment, and cross your fingers, as a winner of a pair of tickets to The Hangout Music Fest 2012 will be announced. Will it be you?

Tickets are $20 in advance or at the door; military with ID $15. The event is open to those 21 and older.

Grab your friends and come to the beach to ring in the new year. The more the merrier—and the more affordable. Fill a 5-bedroom condo or house in Gulf Shores, or maybe a 6-bedroom Gulf Shores property. You’ll be close to The Hangout, and you can get 2 FREE nights when you use promo code 11HOL.

Benefit Times Two Saturday at The Hangout

Friday, November 18th, 2011

The Hangout in Gulf Shores is wonderfully active in the community, whether supplying entertainment (such as The Hangout Music Fest), hosting contests (including the Oyster Cook-off), or welcoming organizations that choose the restaurant as a home base for special fundraising activities.

All-day fun at The Hangout on Saturday, November 19, to benefit breast cancer research and offer a safe haven for children.

This Saturday, November 19, 2011, combines two different causes into one fun event to benefit breast cancer research and to provide a safe home for needy, neglected and abused children.

The 1st Annual Ta Ta Ride is to raise awareness and money for UAB’s breast cancer research. Ta Ta Towing donates 10% of every tow to this program, so it’s fitting that they are presenting the motorcycle ride/poker run. Register Friday evening at The Hangout’s pre-party between 5 and 8 p.m., or sign up Saturday morning between 9 and 11 a.m. for the 11:00 ride that begins and ends at The Hangout. The fee for each bike is $30, and $10 extra for a passenger. It’s a good thing the weather should be in the mid-70s, as it is strongly suggested that all bikers – gals AND GUYS – dress in a bikini top.

The after party at The Hangout runs from 5 until 9 p.m., and is open to the public. Included will be games such as a frozen T-shirt contest, a men’s bikini top contest ($200 prize!), a cash raffle and a Dyna Super Glide 100th Anniversary Edition raffle. A $500 prize will be awarded for the best poker hand collected during the ride. Music will be provided by Foxy Iguanas, fronted by Smokey Otis; their family-friendly show begins at 7 p.m., with an adult show following at 11 p.m.

You can party all day or evening, but be sure to arrive before 6 p.m., as a pair of Iron Bowl tickets will be up for grabs in a live auction. The Iron Bowl (just a small contest between Auburn and Alabama) will be played Saturday, November 26, so this will be quite a competitive auction so close to the event date. And your bid supports the Alabama Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch in Summerdale—100% of the money raised will help give school-age children a better life.

Plan for a full day of fun that will benefit good causes. You are promised an enjoyable and appropriate start to your Thanksgiving week. Need more details? Call 251-752-1110 or 251-978-3990.

Oyster Cook-Off at the Beach

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

The event may not officially begin until 11:00 a.m. this Saturday, November 5, but you can bet the planning for the 4thAnnual Oyster Cook-off has kicked into high gear over the past few weeks.

4th Annual Oyster Cook-off, The Hangout, Gulf Shores, Alabama, 2011

Cheer on your favorite restaurant in the Oyster Cook-off. November 5, 2011, The Hangout, Gulf Shores, Alabama.

With $10,000 in prizes—including cash and Hangout Music Fest tickets—the competition is fierce. The most coveted prize, though, is bragging rights as creator of the best oyster dish in our island area. Food categories include Cajun Oysters, Oysters Rockefeller, and Create-Your-Own Raw Oysters; they will be judged by an official panel. An overall grand champion also will be named, a fast-paced contest will crown the three speediest shuckers, a best booth will be chosen, and everyone attending will get to vote for the People’s Choice winner.

Tents are already being set up for each competitor, the beer garden is about to be stocked full of craft beers and all the makings for Cordina frozen cocktails, and folks are abuzz with a rivalry befitting the weekend’s sports events.

Will your favorite oyster eatery be competing? Come cheer them on (admission is free!), and sample their savory concoctions for just $1 per ticket:
City Grill
Cotton’s
DeSoto’s Seafood Kitchen
Flora-Bama
Gulf Island Grill
The Hangout
Happy Harbor
Lester’s (2010 Cajun winner and Grand Champion)
LL’s Seafood (2010 Raw winner)
Mudbugs
The Original Oyster House
Shrimp Basket (2010 Rockefeller winner)
Steve’s Place
Sunset Cork Room
Sysco
West Beach Grille

Wolf Bay Lodge

There will be plenty of cook-off activities to keep you engaged, but if you are looking for even more from this gathering, you’ll find it! Live music will be provided by The Rentmakers, and the big screen will broadcast SEC football (be sure to join in the related games and prize opportunities). You can always count on The Hangout for a great variety of high-energy fun for all ages.
