Sixty-five local instrumentalists cranking up American music, situated among numerous trees on a green lawn, with a backdrop of the bay. It’s a perfect Sunday afternoon in the fall.
The Baldwin Pops Band kicked off its 15th season last week, and this Sunday, October 23, 2011, they will be appearing in Orange Beach at Waterfront Park on Canal Road.
The free program includes concert band compositions by American composers, such as “American Barndance” by Richard L. Saucedo and “With Pleasure: An Original Rag” by John Philip Sousa. (A band concert of American music has to include something by Sousa, right? And it’s always a winner!)
Also on the program are some wonderful standards that have been arranged for band, including “Mancini!” by Henry Mancini (arranged by Stephen Bulla) and “Stardust” by Hoagy Carmichael (arranged by Jack Bullock).
Oh, there’s plenty more music to enjoy, but it would be more fun for you to discover it for yourself. The concert begins at 5 p.m.
By the way: If you are up for a little competition, the Checkered Tablecloth Award will go to the group with the most interesting picnic setup. So make it a full-fledged dinner date with your family or friends while you soak up the wonderful fall weather along the Alabama Gulf Coast, accompanied by great American music.
