Alabama Coastal BirdFest

Written by Meyer Vacation Rentals on July 20th, 2009

October 15 through 18, 2009, is set for the 6th Annual John L. Borom Alabama Coastal BirdFest. Nineteen guided tours will be offered during the course of the four days; many of the popular past tours will be repeated, and some new locations have been added.

Birders from across the country are expected to flock to this event, along with the winged creatures they are so interested in learning about and viewing. And local aficionados will be especially pleased that the guest speakers are well-respected folks from our own backyard.

Alabama BirdFest 2009 is slated for October 15-18.

Photographer Kathy Hicks created this year’s BirdFest poster. On opening night she will present a selection of her photography, which she has set to music, during A Gulf Coast Photo Journal. Kathy’s talent with the lens has captured the interest of magazine editors – including those with Forbes and Science Daily – and she is currently an exclusive camera artist for iStock.com.

Friday night’s gathering will feature Dr. Bill Summerour, a well-known biologist and talented artist. His vocation meshed well with extra duties as editor of Alabama Birdlife magazine. Now retired, he continues to paint, photograph and research, with a particular interest in red crossbills in the Talladega National Forest and Swainson’s warbler in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. Some of this area’s best birding places will be highlighted during his Birding the Alabama Gulf Coast presentation.

Five Rivers Delta Resource Center (on the Causeway to Mobile) will be used as the main location, and tours will depart from there. Some events will be held nearby, including the day-long Bird & Conservation Expo on October 17 at Faulkner State College in downtown Fairhope.

Registration is now open for this growing event.  Don’t miss your opportunity to enjoy the northern Gulf Coast’s beautiful weather, lovely scenery and great variety of fall’s feathered friends.

And as you are making your plans, don’t forget to reserve your accommodations at the beach in the Gulf Shores island area. Choose your perfect location from Meyer Real Estate’s more than 1900 condos or beach houses, and save money (up to 50% off!) by taking advantage of the specials and Hot Deals.
