Back-to-School Beach Bash

To celebrate the end-of-summer/back-to-school time of year, the City of Gulf Shores is hosting a Beach Bash on Friday, August 19, 2011 at—where else?—the beach!

Gulf Shores, Alabama, beach, bash, s'mores, back to school, steel drum band

Free family fun! Enjoy s'mores, live music, snow cones and more at the public beach in Gulf Shores on Friday, August 19, 2011.

Enjoy family time as you assemble and savor s’mores at a campfire you don’t have to build yourself. Let your kids talk you into joining them as they dance to the music of the Panvision Steel Drum Band from Trinidad and Tobago plus DJ music between sets. Brightly colored snow cones help everyone cool down after dancing. And balloon artists will be there to create fun souvenirs from the evening.

Join this free gathering that begins at 5 p.m. between lifeguard towers 3 and 4 at the public beach in Gulf Shores. Bring the whole family and mingle with your neighbors and some old friends, and also make some new friends. It’s such a pleasant way to transition to the post-summer season at the beach!

New Artist Showcase at Gulf Shores Library

While we may not think of it as such, we “read” a piece of art. We read the individual colors as well as the combinations. We read the lines, whether crisp and distinct or fuzzy and implied. We read the subject matter or nondescript shapes. Much like a book, each is filled with specific points of interest as well as an overall theme—literally, the bigger picture.

Mary Louise Brush, New Artist Series, Thomas B Norton Public Library, Gulf Shores, Alabama

The August New Artist Showcase at Thomas B. Norton Public Library in Gulf Shores, AL, features colorful works by Mary Louise Brush.

So it’s a natural arrangement for a library to include artwork. That’s why the Thomas B. Norton Public Library, 221 W. 19th Ave. in Gulf Shores, hosts a New Artist Showcase highlighting a different artist each month.

The August artist is Mary Louise Brush, a Greenville, Mississippi native who now calls Gulf Shores “home.” She attended an oil painting class at Birmingham Museum of Art, which encouraged her to develop and expand her talents to include acrylic, watercolor and drawing. She now concentrates on colorful drawings that appeal to a wide audience.

You will find Mary Louise’s artwork placed throughout the library during the month of August. So stop in to admire her creations starting at 10:00 Monday through Saturday mornings; closing times are Monday and Tuesday at 8:00 p.m., Wednesday through Friday at 6:00 p.m., and Saturday at 3:00 p.m. While there, be sure to explore all that the library has to offer: books, of course, but also classes, computer usage, audio books and more. For further information, call the library’s Help Desk at 251-968-1176.

The Jungle Book Kids—This Weekend!

Remember the animated musical about Mowgli, the young boy raised by wolves in the jungle? It was a childhood favorite, including the popular song “The Bare Necessities.”

Enjoy the stage musical version of The Jungle Book Kids this weekend in Gulf Shores.

This weekend—Friday and Saturday, August 12 and 13, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, August 14 at 2 p.m.—you and your children and grandchildren can relive this wonderful story of The Jungle Book in a staged children’s presentation.

This one-act musical has been carefully adapted from the original, keeping it family friendly, and making it sparkle with energetic music and colorful characters. When the villain tiger Shere Khan decides that the young boy is no longer welcome in the jungle, Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear try to escort Mowgli safely to the “man village.” But they encounter some interesting characters along the way.

The Jungle Book Kids includes an age-old moral to the story and, of course, a happy ending. Don’t miss your opportunity to watch the young stars shine at South Baldwin Community Theater in Gulf Shores, 2022 W. Second St., across from Bodenhamer Center and the Erie Meyer Civic Center. Adult tickets are $10, student tickets $5, and ages 2 and under are admitted free. Call 968-6721 for further information.
