Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Bright patches of color float across the sky at sunrise and again at sunset. After dark, they create a beautiful glowing presence while tethered to the ground.

Watch the balloons take off, fly, land and glow during Foley's Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival over Father's Day Weekend.

While the old-fashioned aircraft act as bookends to each day of fun, the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival fills the daytime with even more to do.

But first is the pre-event kickoff at Tanger Outlets in Foley. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, the balloon glow will be accompanied by children’s activities including a tower of bubbles and butterflies on stilts, plus Mom and Dad could win gift cards to the Tanger Outlet stores.

The official event begins at 8:00 a.m. Friday, June 17, at the Foley Soccer Complex grounds on West Hwy. 98. Don’t worry if you aren’t sure exactly where that is, or where to park; shuttle buses will run 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., with stops at Heritage Park (corner of Hwys. 59 and 98), Foley Elementary School and the Tanger Outlet Center. Admission is free; parking on the grounds is available for $5.

Scheduled for nine performances throughout the weekend is Disc-Connected K9’s World Famous Frisbee Dogs, an amazing and amusing show enjoyed by all ages. Antique tractors will be on display and 15 food vendors will tempt you with their specialties that include Pot Roast Sundae and fried pickles. Children’s games and activities, live musical entertainment—including Rising Stars talent winners and Saturday evening’s “Almost McGraw,” the nation’s top Tim McGraw Tribute Show at 8:00 p.m.—and still more help to round out this well-planned event. View the Balloon Festival schedule for further information.

Cookout on the Coast

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Food as energy. Food as a social event. Food as a fundraiser. No matter which way you look at it, the Orange Beach Fire & Rescue folks have it covered Saturday, June 11.

Orange Beach Fire Rescue, Cookout, coast, fundraiser, Boston butt, Gulf Shores, Alabama

Savor your share of 4,500 pounds of Boston butt at Orange Beach Fire and Rescue's 43rd Annual Cookout on the Coast.

The preparation of 4,500 pounds of melt-in-your mouth Boston butt will begin Friday morning. These seasoned veterans of the grill know that the slow-cooking process takes a full day, and they will be ready for the first customers by the opening time of 11:00 Saturday morning.

Now comes the time for your big decision: Do you purchase a plate with nearly a pound of pulled pork plus bread, baked beans, slaw and a pickle, or do you opt for two piled-high sandwiches and a pickle? Either way, it’s a mere $8 per plate.

But that’s not your only decision to make during Cookout on the Coast. Desserts prepared by the Ladies Auxiliary will be sold indoors. Good luck choosing just one! Also available, beginning at noon, are bulk quantities of whole butts and bulk pork.

You are encouraged to share your mealtime with your neighbors at the Orange Beach Community Center at 27235 Canal Road, across from Fire Station #2. If you prefer, you may request carry out or even use the drive-thru service—but keep in mind that desserts will not be available at the drive-thru. And please let us suggest that you don’t wait until the closing time of 3:00 to pick up your meals. We’d hate for you to arrive after the supply is gobbled up!

So get a great meal on Saturday and support the ongoing community outreach programs presented by the Orange Beach Fire & Rescue Department. The free CPR classes, fire prevention presentations and public school education programs are vital to the safety of our community. Funding from the cookout also assists with training programs and equipment for our emergency personnel. For more details, call 251-981-6166.

Fort Morgan Candlelight Tours

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Each Tuesday evening in June and July, period-clad re-enactors will guide you through Fort Morgan. Some of these folks will speak directly to you, while others will allow you to eavesdrop on “private” conversations about life in 1861. You’ll learn facts about the fort and get a glimpse into the lives of those who lived and soldiered there.

Fort Morgan State Historic Site, Gulf Shores, Alabama, candlelight tour 2011

Discover history during guided candlelight tours each Tuesday in June and July at Fort Morgan State Historic Site.

The one-hour tours begin at 7:00 p.m. each Tuesday, weather permitting. In keeping with the realistic portrayal of the era, candlelight will be used to illuminate the fort; however, you are welcome to bring flashlights to assist your return to your vehicle after the tour. Another suggestion is mosquito spray, as the warmer weather will certainly bring them out. And yes, those insects are a realistic part of the tour!

Experience this Southeastern Tourism Society Top 20 Event and you’ll see why it has received such a well-deserved designation. Learn a little history, enjoy some family time, and take part in a popular presentation.

You’ll find Fort Morgan State Historical Site at the west end of Fort Morgan Road in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for children 7 and older. For more information or to check on a possible weather cancellation, call 251-540-5257.

SummerTide Theatre: Dames at Sea

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

SummerTide Theatre: A small group of current and recently graduated college students and faculty members who easily transport their audience away from their hectic days and into a world of musical theater entertainment. As the professional summer theatre of the University of Alabama, these talented folks have brought innumerable smiles to Gulf Shores for the past 7 years, and this 8th season is no exception.

This year’s show, Dames at Sea, is everything you would expect from a 1930s musical: a self-centered star, a sweet young thing who wants to be a star, a helpful friend, a handsome love interest, his friend, and an authority figure. They rekindle old flames or fall in love at first sight, they get caught up in misunderstandings, they kiss and make up. But mostly, they sing and they dance. And they do it well.

Each Tuesday through Sunday evening from June 3 through July 1, SummerTide Theatre will tell the story of a new Broadway show that almost closed when the theater was sold, but instead was staged aboard a nearby battleship. In spite of the mid-show setbacks to the characters in the story, you will leave feeling happy and lighthearted thanks to the tap dancing, the music and, of course, a fairy-tale happy ending.

Curtain is at 8 p.m. each night. Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for children under 12; group rates for parties of 10 or more are available. Box office hours are Tuesday through Sunday from noon until 8 p.m., so you may reserve or pick up your tickets ahead of time or at the door. The George C. Meyer Performing Arts Center is located at 2022 W. 2nd St. in Gulf Shores, across from the Erie Meyer Civic Center and the Bodenhamer Recreation Center.

Enjoy a break from your routine in this intimate setting and get a glimpse of 1930s Broadway with SummerTide Theatre’s Dames at Sea.
