All-American 4th of July at The Hangout

The official holiday may be July 4, but at The Hangout in Gulf Shores you are encouraged to celebrate all weekend long.

Celebrate with games and music all weekend at the All-American 4th of July event at The Hangout in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Be a kid again as you participate or cheer on competitors in the wiffle ball tournament. Get your fill of watermelon without worrying about how much ends up on your face, arms or clothes when you compete for top honors in the eating contest. Try your hand at tossing water balloons—it may be harder than you think! Show your strength and agility during the limbo, hula-hoop and tug-of-war games. Find out whether wearing a frozen T-shirt on a hot day is refreshing or just downright cold. Test your skill at tossing whipped cream pies, and play in the foam mountain or sand pile.

You can be as engaged or as separated from the activities as you choose in this spacious indoor/outdoor setting where Hwy. 59 meets the beach. Either way, the weekend will be underscored by great music each evening. Catch the band Crooked 11 on Friday at 7:00, then stay for Mario Mena at 11 p.m. Saturday’s schedule has The Park Band at 7 followed by Foxy Iguanas at 11. Sunday brings Rumor Mill to the stage at 7:00 and Mario Mena at 11:00. Monday’s lineup begins again with Rumor Mill at 7:00 then features Crucial Rhyme at 11 p.m. (Must be 21 or older after 11 p.m.)

All ages will have a great time escaping from the daily routines and worries. That’s what The Hangout is all about! No matter what hour—starting with breakfast that includes Pirates and Princesses shows at 8:30, 9:30 and 10:30, and ending with late-night music until 2:00 a.m.—you’ll find The Hangout a lively change of pace for kids and the kid inside.

Free evening concert of laid-back island music with Brent Burns and Sunny Jim on Thursday, June 30 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

All of these and more create the theme of the evening when you attend a free trop-rock concert Thursday evening, June 30, at the Erie Meyer Civic Center in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

The stars of the evening are Brent Burns and Sunny Jim. You may recognize Brent’s name from the local music scene, as he is quite popular here for his covers and his often-humorous originals. He was recognized as the 2010 Trop Rock Award winner as Songwriter of the Year and also for CD and Song of the Year, and in 2008 as Entertainer of the Year and CD of the Year.

Sunny Jim’s music is heard across the globe on Jimmy Buffett’s Radio Margaritaville available via satellite. He got his musical start in Southern California, soon headed to Nashville, and then began a 12-year stint performing in the Cayman Islands. Guitar was his first instrument, but the Caribbean sound inspired him to develop a talent for steel drums as well.

Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, snacks and beverages for this evening of laid-back island entertainment presented as part of the Gulf Shores Outdoor and In series of concerts and more. You’ll find the fun on the lawn next to the library, beginning at 6:00 p.m. For more details, contact the City of Gulf Shores Special Events Division at 251-968-1171.

Crawfish Boil at Flora-Bama

It’s hard to believe it’s already the end of crawfish season! But as they say, “All good things must come to an end.” (Thank goodness it’s only a temporary end, and they’ll be back as wonderful as ever next season.)

Celebrate the end of crawfish season at Flora-Bama's Crawfish Boil on Saturday, June 25, 2011!

Rather than let it get them down, the folks at Flora-Bama have decided to celebrate. Their Crawfish Boil is guaranteed to bring joy through terrific food, plenty of beach drinks, the best music, and loads of fun.

Starting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2011, delight your taste buds with Cajun crawfish (served with lots of napkins, of course!). Cool your throat with ice cold beer or bushwhackers. Treat your ears to live music from a variety of fabulous artists. And party with fun-loving folks from across the globe.

By the way, you can also win a Southern Comfort bike! Buy a crawfish plate ($5 per plate or $10 for an all-you-can-eat ticket) and you get a free ticket for the drawing.

There is no cover charge or age restriction for the daytime crowd. Starting around 6 p.m., you must be 18 or older to enter, and pay a cover charge of $5. The 10:00 p.m. hour brings the entry age to 21, but those under 21 who are already inside are allowed to stay.

Make the Flora-Bama Crawfish Boil a must-do this weekend. If you’ve never eaten crawfish, it’s perfectly OK—there will be plenty of experts nearby who will happily show you how. You’ll be hooked in no time!
