Festival of Musicians on Gulf Coast July 8–12

Five full days of a huge variety of bands and solo gigs covering a handful of venues on and near the beach—just $50, or $15 for a one-day pass. Or FREE if you are one of the first to ask for it. (Keep reading to find out how.)

Perform or listen—or both!—at the Festival of Musicians event July 8–12 along the Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast.

But this is more than a series of simultaneous concerts. It’s also a contest! Participating musicians will perform on a series of stages, collecting “kudos” for their performances. The acts collecting the most kudos will be invited to perform on the biggest stages. Folks from the music business world (promoters, producers, etc.) will be there, taking note of crowd favorites. The networking possibilities are endless.

All musicians are invited to take part in this event, whether instrumentalist or vocalist, professional or just getting started, solo or group. Even karaoke singers are welcome! Just bring all equipment necessary for you to do what you do. And merchandise vendors can also take part by renting space to sell their wares.

“Five Days of Peace, Love & Music” can be experienced July 8–12, 2010, along the Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast. See all the details on how to participate as an audience member, performer or vendor by visiting the Festival of Musicians website. You’ll also find a list of performers who have already committed to make this inaugural event a success.

Oh—about those free tickets. When you check in for your stay with Meyer Real Estate, 5-day and 1-day passes are free for the asking, while supplies last. Just let the front desk personnel know how many passes you’d like to have!

FREE Beach Concert – Jimmy Buffett, Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown Band & More

It has been nearly 12 years since Jimmy Buffett played for local audiences—a 1998 fundraiser in Mobile benefited hurricane relief efforts. In just a few days, Jimmy will once again lend his musical fame to raise money for the Gulf Coast, this time appearing in Gulf Shores as a response to the oil spill disaster. The concert’s goal is to promote beach tourism and raise money for wildlife-related organizations to better respond to the crisis.

Upon learning of the fundraising effort, some of Jimmy’s friends offered to help out by donating their talents, as well. Joining Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band for this free show are the Zac Brown Band, Kenny Chesney, Sonny Landreth, Allen Toussaint and Jesse Winchester.

A large stage will be erected at the west end of the Gulf Shores Public Beach, where attendees will be able to enjoy the performances accompanied by the gentle sounds of the surf on Sunday, July 11. Gates will open at 3:00 p.m., and the first performer will take the stage at 5:00. Cable channel CMT will broadcast live from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m.

More information will be shared as it becomes available, including other star-studded, benefit beach concerts this summer.

Spellers, Unite in Laughter!

Whether you can spell words such as “syzygy” and “crepuscule” or couldn’t begin to pronounce (much less spell) either of them, you can be assured that The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee spells an evening of rollicking fun.

The SummerTide Theatre group from the University of Alabama has brought professional musical theater to the George C. Meyer Performing Arts Center in Gulf Shores, Alabama for seven years. This year’s show—centered around six teenagers competing in the local spelling bee, and the three adults running the contest—is yet another tremendous hit with audience members.

Never heard of the show? Do not let that stop you! Not only is it just plain fun, but it’s clever and fast-paced. You can’t help but be drawn in by the quirky cast of characters and the energetic and pleasingly complex musical score. And the amazing acting and singing talent of each of the actors has been beautifully brought out by the outstanding stage and musical direction.

Cast members are kept on their toes in the first half with three audience members who are chosen shortly before curtain to round out the group of contestants. Not only do they spell, they even get involved in the musical numbers. It doesn’t matter if you know the folks making a guest appearance—it adds another entertaining layer to the already hilarious script.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee plays at 8:00 Tuesday through Saturday evenings until July 2. The Performing Arts Center is located at 2022 W. 2nd St., across from the Civic Center. Tickets may be purchased online at www.SummerTide.org, or call the box office at noon or later on show days: 251-968-6721. Adult tickets are $17, children 12 and under $10; call about group rates.

Three words of advice: See this show! (And then see it again with friends!)

FREE Concert! Air National Guard Band of the South

Our military bands are known to be among the best concert bands in the country. Their programming of various musical styles from marches and light classics to traditional band repertoire and instrumental arrangements of favorite songs – okay, plus seeing those crisp uniforms so proudly worn by the members – never fails to reward us with an uplifting experience.

So when one of these ensembles comes to our area, my husband and I do our best to be there. For weeks now, since receiving the flyer for the Gulf Shores Outdoors & In series, we have been looking forward to Friday, June 11. What makes it even better is that it’s a FREE concert.

The evening’s stars are the extremely talented members of the Air National Guard Band of the South. These folks serve as traditional guardsmen, plus they average 50 performances a year. Although their main focus is the Southeast, they do travel to other states and even other countries. They perform in various combinations of personnel depending on the needs of the function, but the June 11 presentation will be the full concert band. We are in for a real treat!

So be there with your family and friends to applaud these dedicated service musicians Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Erie Meyer Civic Center in Gulf Shores, corner of W. 19th Ave. and W. 2nd St. Doors will open at 6:30, so arrive early to claim your favorite seats. My husband and I won’t be able to get there much before 7:00, and I hope we have trouble finding an empty seat.
