German Sausage Festival

If you are anywhere near Elberta, Alabama this Saturday, the aroma of the secret-recipe sausage being cooked over an open flame will lure you in. Even if you’ve never attended the German Sausage Festival, it’s quite easy to find the main attraction—just inhale the delicious scent and you’ll be led straight to the tasty treasure.

Smother your sausage in tangy sauerkraut and other flavorful enhancements, or enjoy it plain. Either way, you’ll know you’ve hit upon something special. If you prefer, order a hot dog, hamburger or BBQ sandwich. Supplement your main course with German-style filled cabbage, goulash, red beans and rice, or potato salad. Don’t forget the treats afterward: Ice cream, peanuts and popcorn round out the festival foods.

Some of the individual vendors serve up their own baked or canned goods, so be prepared to take home an edible souvenir or two. Among the 250 booths, you will find artisans of all types displaying and selling their handmade wares. Kids’ carnival rides and all-day live entertainment encourage plenty of family time to build memories.

Although the festival runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, word on the street suggests arriving before 3 p.m., as it’s not unusual to sell out of the 7000 pounds of sausage by then.

You’ll find the festival situated at the intersection of Hwy. 98 and Co. Rd. 83 in downtown Elberta, just a few minutes east of Foley. If you can’t make it this weekend, you will get another opportunity in the fall; the German Sausage Festival is held the last Saturdays of March and October each year.

Join the Elberta Volunteer Fire Department and the city of Elberta in this hugely popular fund-raising event. After all, 32 years of sell-out sausage proves that this is the place to be!

Eye candy on the highway.

The 10th Annual Corvette Show is Saturday, March 20, 2010, in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Since it appeared on the scene in 1953, the Corvette has likely garnered millions of whistles of appreciation. Yes, this famous Chevrolet model—coupe, convertible and T-top—holds bragging rights as one of the most admired vehicles on the road.

Between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 20, you are invited to feast your eyes on these beauties of the automobile world, and even vote for the best car; the awards announcement will be made at 4:00 p.m.

Enjoy the live entertainment during the show, and before and afterward take time to explore the marina, restaurants, shopping and movie theater at The Wharf—and don’t forget to ride the Southeast’s largest Ferris wheel.

Admission is free. Should there be rain, the show will move into the parking garage—but at the time of this writing, the weekend forecast looks absolutely beautiful, so get out and enjoy the warm sunshine!

If you have a Corvette you’d like to show off, registration is just $30 and includes a Friday evening dinner and gathering of enthusiastic owners. Contact Dennis Frazier at 251-968-8141 or dfrazier@gulftel.com.

Columbus Ships Discover Gulf Shores

Spring brings thoughts of the freedom of warm days ahead, including plenty of water-related activities to be enjoyed. But as you look forward, don’t miss a unique opportunity to peek into life on the seas as it was more than 500 years ago.

Replicas of two of Christopher Columbus' ships visit Gulf Shores March 10-15.

Replicas of the Nina and the Pinta—yes, two of the ships used by Christopher Columbus—will be docked at LuLu’s at Homeport Marina in Gulf Shores, Alabama, from March 10 through 14, along with a knowledgeable and passionate staff eager to answer questions.

The Nina, Columbus’ favorite of his three famous ships, exists in replica form as the only floating museum of its kind. The Pinta replica was built with a handful of modern amenities and is available for private parties and charters. Both are a type of ship called a caravel, which was commonly used as a trading vessel. And both were recently handcrafted using old-fashioned tools but without the benefit of an actual blueprint from their day.

Since February 2009, these two ships have been making their way around the U.S. After a short break for the crew and some time to make any needed repairs and adjustments, they are back on the seas and ready to delight crowds at a number of destinations throughout the country.

Plan now for your opportunity to learn about the ships, about Christopher Columbus, and about life during the Age of Discovery. Walk-aboard, self-guided tours are open from 9:00 to 5:00 each day. Tickets are just $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, $3 for students, and free for ages 4 and younger. For more information, call 284-495-4618, or visit The Columbus Foundation’s website.
